Float Therapy: What to Expect on Your First Session

Monday 20 July 2026·By Melbourne Wellness & Recovery Centre

Floatation therapy — also called REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) — involves lying in a pod of warm, saturated Epsom salt water in total darkness and silence.

**The Science**
With 550kg of dissolved magnesium sulphate, your body floats effortlessly. Without gravity or sensory input, your nervous system shifts into deep rest, cortisol drops and your brain produces theta waves — the same state as deep meditation.

**What to Expect**
Your first session runs for 60 minutes. You'll shower before and after, wear nothing in the pod, and control the environment (music, lighting) with buttons inside. Most people feel profound relaxation; some fall asleep.

**Benefits Reported by Clients**
• Dramatically reduced muscle soreness
• Relief from chronic pain and fibromyalgia
• Reduced anxiety and improved sleep
• Enhanced creativity and problem-solving

**First-Timer Tips**
Don't float hungry or on a full stomach. Avoid shaving the day before (the salt stings). Bring your own earplugs if you prefer. Give it at least 2–3 sessions before judging results.

Book your first float at our South Yarra centre.
